At the start of the Sherwood New Year 10K and 5K

On song at the Sherwood 10K & 5K

Marshal support and musical motivation at this super scenic event.

Runners of all abilities were on the trail of the not-so-lonesome pines at the sold out Sherwood New Year 10K & 5K (Sunday 22 January). They sampled the delights of Sherwood Pines in congenial company at the perfect event to get 2023 up and running.

The cold snap in the UK meant temperatures were on the Baltic side for a two lap (or one for the 5K) race around the largest forest in the East Midlands. A well organised and friendly event from Nice Work, it challenged many a runner along with the freezing weather! There was the option to drop down in distance to the 5K due to the cold.

A heavy frost overnight enhanced the trees and surroundings of this historic area that was originally part of Sherwood Forest famous for its association with Robin Hood. The only hunting on Sunday was for podium places, age group wins and personal targets.

The race started at 10am with runners following an undulating, well signed route on multi-terrain with efficient, helpful marshals keeping everyone going. The lively atmosphere included an ‘A to Z of singers’ from a trio of runners whose alphabetical knowledge of artists entertained those around them, spurring them on to the finish. Heh if it works, don't knock it!

Ben Walkingshaw raced to victory in the 10K, winning in 38:09. Neil Kennedy was second in 40:16 with Rory Ashmore third in 40:32.

Sylwia Dmuchowska was the female winner in 45:38. Sarah Dowling of Skegness & District RC the second female in 46:25 and Emma Jones of Croft Ambrey RC, third female in 46:50.

In the 5K, Scott Stokes of Sneyd Striders was the winning man in 20:06. Jennifer Hampson-Thul the winning lady in 22:11.
