Start of the 2022 Stephen Price Memorial 10K

Second SP10K makes a moving tribute

Adults and children paid their respects at this memorial run.

Michael Smith, Helen Woods and Aaron Lugg were the winners at the Stephen Price Memorial 10K and 2 Mile Fun (Sunday 11 September). There was added poignancy to this special event that returned after a Covid induced hiatus.

A minute’s silence was held before the start of the Stephen Price Memorial 10K (SP10K) in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. Runners bowed their heads as befitted the moment.

Many wore red, white and blue headbands and wristbands - the late Stephen Price was known for these along with his famous ‘airplane’ move that he performed on the finish line.

They were keen to test themselves again on the two lap, multi-terrain course that started and finished at The Recreation Centre Playing fields, Aston-on-Trent.

The 10K was followed by the 2 Mile Fun Run on part of the same route. Conditions were misty and warm and it was damp underfoot but all runnable and marshals did a sterling job of ensuring people didn’t go off course and provided plenty of encouragement.

First home in the second SP10K was Michael Smith in 36:28. Ian Hales followed in 37:03 with Tim Caldwell third in 37:34.

Helen Woods was the women’s winner in 39:25. Charlotte Buck took second in 43:21 and Danielle Stack third in 43:33.

All the 10K results can be found via the runABC Midlands Race Listings page.

Speedy youngster Aaron Lugg - nephew of the late Stephen Price - was the winner in the sold out 2 Mile Fun Run.

The 10K top three men and women received a decorated wooden trophy courtesy of Bob Neill Pyrography and vouchers from Derby Runner. Hand-made wooden trophies were also presented to the top 3 in the Fun Run. Finishers in both events received a medal.

All profits from the event donated to Cardiomyopathy UK, Pride Park U11 Girls Football Team and Aston School Parents Association.

A fitting tribute to 'Pricey' on an emotional day for all.
