Run The Queen Of The Hebrides
Experience whisky, wildlife and a world-class route at this island half...
Head to the Queen of the Hebrides this summer for one of the most scenic running events in the country. The 2025 Ardbeg Islay Half Marathon takes place on 2 August and offers a unique combination of breathtaking landscapes and the chance to explore the island’s iconic whisky distilleries during your stay.
Now in its fourth decade, the Islay Half Marathon has become a fixture on Scotland’s summer running calendar. First held in 1986, the 13.1-mile route starts in the island’s main village of Bowmore and follows a circular course that reaches out to Islay Airport before returning. Along the way, runners are treated to a constantly changing backdrop of rolling hills, open moorland and sweeping sea views that have earned Islay its reputation as one of the most beautiful islands in the Inner Hebrides.
The course offers an entertaining blend of flat sections, steady inclines and fast descents, making it an excellent choice for runners of all abilities. In 2024, 92 runners took on the challenge, with Josh Wood claiming first place in 1:12:48. The first female across the line was Jill Smylie in an impressive 1:29:52.
For those looking to combine running with relaxation, the event is the perfect excuse to turn race day into a longer getaway. Islay is renowned for its wildlife, seafood and dramatic coastal scenery, but it is perhaps most famous for its peaty, smoky whiskies. With nine working distilleries on the island, visitors can enjoy tastings, tours and a deep dive into the island’s world-famous whisky heritage. Whether you’re raising a glass to celebrate a PB or simply soaking up the island atmosphere, Islay offers a truly unforgettable experience.
