Marathon running will return to Aberdeen in 2027 for the first time in 37 years, following the successful launch of the City of Aberdeen Half Marathon this summer. The inaugural Half Marathon attracted a sell out field and enthusiastic local support, providing the platform for organisers to reintroduce a full Marathon to the Granite City for the first time since 1990.

Taking place on Saturday 17 July 2027, the expanded Aberdeen Marathon Weekend will feature a Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K, creating a festival of running in the heart of the city. A new start and finish area close to Marischal College will place runners and spectators at the centre of the action, helping to create a vibrant atmosphere throughout race day.

The redesigned routes will showcase many of Aberdeen's most recognisable landmarks, including the River Dee, Aberdeen Beach, the historic Port of Aberdeen and the University of Aberdeen. Combining city streets, riverside sections and coastal scenery, the courses have been designed to make the most of Aberdeen's naturally cool summer climate while offering fast, enjoyable racing for runners of all abilities.

The Marathon and Half Marathon are each limited to 2,000 runners, with a further 1,000 places available in the 5K. Whether stepping up to a first Marathon, targeting a Half Marathon personal best or taking on the 5K, participants can expect a professionally organised event with an emphasis on an outstanding runner experience.

While the City of Aberdeen Half Marathon proved that the city could once again host a major road running event, the return of the Marathon marks a significant milestone for Scottish running. Blending a rich sporting heritage with a modern city centre festival, the 2027 event promises to write an exciting new chapter in Aberdeen's marathon history.
