Running Amok In May
If scenic races are your thing, get in quick and bag yourself a spot at this gorgeous May offering...
The Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon & 10K will celebrate its 20th anniversary at this year's Festival Weekend on 24/25 May. The event was established 2006 in Campbeltown, located close to the beautiful Mull of Kintyre and over the years has been voted as the UK's top race multiple times so places tend to sell out fast.
The race has grown in popularity due to its picturesque location, fantastic astmosphere as well as the post-race celebratons of Danish pastries and ceilidh dancing.
The fun starts with the junior event on Saturday 24 May and continues the following day with the Half Marathon and 10K which will be followed by the ceilidh that evening. Both of Sunday's races start together at the War Memorial in Campbeltown. The 10K is run around three sides of scenic Campbeltown Loch and is mainly flat attracting runners looking for a PB.
The half marathon route leaves the town and runs through the countryside, including around 1K on the hard sandy beach of Machrihanish/Westport. This is a fantastic chance to take in the spectacular views across the water to Islay, Jura and Gigha - a highlight for any visitor.
Speaking about their event, organisers say: "A special feature of our event is the range of other activities which take place over the weekend, making it more than just a race. Our post race ceilidh is a real hit with runners and non runners alike and is worth purchasing a ticket for. A kilt is optional if you have one!
We really aim to make MOK Run special, a race not to forget. We are famous for our finishline friendliness where our commentator announces all finishers' by name as they cross the line and each finisher is rewarded with a generous goody bag which includes a handmade Campbeltown pottery medal, MOK Run t-shirt and much more! This year will be extra special as it's our 20th anniversary!"
