Juniors invited to hill running come and try days this spring...

Young runners with a love for the hills are being encouraged to try junior hill running this spring as scottishathletics has launched a series of introductory training opportunities across the country.

Junior hill running continues to grow in Scotland, supported by club volunteers and development leads including Angela Mudge and Phil Mestecky, whose work has helped boost participation and performance. To build on that momentum, a programme of Come Try training mornings for athletes aged nine to 12 will take place at the end of March, offering a supportive introduction to off road running and essential hill skills.

Sessions on Sunday 29 March will be held at Abercorn Sports Club, Court Hall, Abriachan and Campsie Glen Village Hall, while a Borders session will take place the previous day in Peebles. Each morning runs from 10am to 1pm and is designed as a gentle introduction to hill running in a safe and encouraging environment.

Older juniors aged 13 to 17 can take part in a dedicated U18 training day on Sunday 29 March at Alva Scout Hall at the foot of the Ochil Hills. The session will focus on hill fitness and technique while also giving young athletes the chance to meet fellow hill runners ahead of the busy competition season. A senior Great Britain athlete will attend to share experience and advice.

Organisers hope the sessions will inspire the next generation of Scottish hill runners by providing accessible opportunities to develop skills, confidence and a love for off road running in some of Scotland’s most scenic landscapes.
