Running High
A stunning Peak District backdrop is part of the appeal of this 5-miler...
The date is set for one of Derbyshire’s most scenic and spirited races, as the Chelmorton Chase returns on 28 September. Held in Chelmorton, the highest village in Derbyshire at 1,100 feet above sea level, this five-mile race offers a true test of strength and stamina.
Affectionately known as Chelly Chase, the event has become a highlight of the local calendar, supported by an enthusiastic team of village marshals and cheered on by residents along the route. Runners follow the now-iconic blue Chelly arrows through a course that combines elevation, sweeping views and a fast finish.
Starting in the heart of the village, the race passes the Church Inn pub and ascends via the Five Wells track to the High Stool limestone trail, where runners are rewarded with breathtaking views across the Peak District. A sharp downhill road section leads back into Chelmorton, with a final sprint down Main Street to the finish line.
The race welcomes both individual and team entries, with a £100 prize for the top affiliated club team. In 2024, that honour went to Sinfin Runners Club from Derbyshire. Other notable winners last year included Kathryn Liddiard, who claimed the Windross Shield as the first woman to finish, and Luke Beresford who was first man home.
The course record stands at an impressive 30:31, held by Buxton runner Andy Wilton, while the local record belongs to Ian Hulse, a Chelmorton resident.
