Cairn Table Hill Race Returns With Tough Climb
Ayrshire hill race returns this summer...
A demanding midweek test returns to the hills of East Ayrshire as the Cairn Table Hill Race takes place near Muirkirk on Wednesday 15 July 2026, with runners tackling a 7.2K hill race from the Walkers Car Park in a classic Scottish off road format. Starting in the evening window between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, the event once again forms part of the popular Bog and Burn series.
The route is short in distance but uncompromising in nature, covering around 7.2K with roughly 360 metres of climb on an out and back course over Cairn Table. The terrain is rough and unmarked, with steep gradients and open hillside sections that demand confidence underfoot and strong climbing ability.
This is firmly positioned as a traditional hill race rather than a trail event, with organisers making it clear that navigation awareness and self reliance are essential. There are no route markings or on course support, and runners must be prepared to handle the conditions independently, adding to the race’s reputation as a true test of hill running ability.
Entries are handled in advance only, with no option to sign up on the night, and numbers are typically limited. That structure, combined with its place in a wider summer series, keeps the race popular among experienced hill runners looking for a sharp, competitive effort in a compact format.
The appeal lies in its simplicity and challenge. A straightforward up and down route, exposed terrain, and a focus on self sufficiency create a race experience that strips things back to the essentials, making it a strong choice for runners who enjoy steep climbs, technical ground, and the raw feel of classic Scottish hill racing.
Entries are available via Entry Central here.
