How Far Will You Go?
Backyard Ultra comes to West Lothian in 2026...
Scotland’s endurance runners are in for a unique challenge as the inaugural Beecraigs Backyard Ultra arrives on 25-26 April 2026, set in the scenic Beecraigs Country Park near Linlithgow. This event offers no fixed distance, no medals for second place and no set finish line. Organisers say: "It’s not about speed but about resilience, pacing and mental strength in one of the world’s most brutally simple race formats."
With a growing fanbase across the UK and beyond, Backyard Ultras are attracting seasoned ultrarunners and curious newcomers alike. The Beecraigs edition promises not just a physical trial, but a psychological one too. Participants start a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour. Complete the loop within 60 minutes, and you earn the right to toe the line for the next one. Fail to finish in time or miss the starting bell, and you’re out. This cycle continues until there is just one runner left. Only that person will be declared the winner. Everyone else is a DNF.
Beecraigs Backyard Ultra marks Scotland’s entry into the global Backyard Ultra circuit and promises to test every runner’s limits against a backdrop of forest trails, gravel paths and undulating woodland terrain. Each lap includes around 150 metres of elevation gain, enough to test the legs without being entirely unforgiving. Runners can expect crisp April air, wildlife-lined paths and a mixture of spring sunshine and dark night-time loops.
Runners will have access to live results, timing, drinks and basic snacks, toilets and a covered rest area if they don’t bring their own tent or support crew. Parking is provided, with space for tents and small campervans. Each participant will receive a DNF memento, while the last runner standing will take home the coveted winner’s trophy.
