Canal Paths And Climbs Define Summer Challenge
Canal 10K with a tough finish...
A unique canal side race returns to the Midlands as the 9 Locks Summer 10K Challenge takes place on Sunday 31 May 2026, linking Stourbridge to Brierley Hill in a point to point 10K format. Starting near The Bonded Warehouse and finishing at The Waterfront, the event offers a mix of scenery and structure that sets it apart from more traditional road races.
The route follows the historic Stourbridge canal, taking runners along traffic free towpaths and through sections of nature reserve before returning to the canal network. The mix of terrain includes tarmac, gravel and sections that can become softer underfoot, adding variety across the distance.
What defines the event is the final stretch, where runners take on the climb of the nine locks that give the race its name. This sustained uphill section in the closing stages provides a clear challenge and shapes how the race is paced from the outset, making it one that rewards control as much as strength.
Positioned as both a social and testing run, the event has built a reputation for offering something different within the regional calendar. The point to point setup adds to the experience, with free coach transport provided from the finish back to the start, helping keep logistics straightforward on race day.
The course demands a measured approach, especially with the climb waiting late on, but it is this balance of scenery and challenge that makes it stand out. Runners who manage their effort early will find the final section tough but rewarding, with a strong sense of achievement at the finish.
