Buxton Half Marathon 2025

Not For The Faint Hearted, Buxton Half Delivers

Buxton Half Marathon Peak District Challenge...

f you are looking for a half marathon that tests more than just pace, the Buxton Half Marathon on Sunday 24 May 2026 offers a 13.1 mile road race that is as demanding as it is scenic. Starting near the iconic Opera House and finishing in Pavilion Gardens, it has built a reputation as one of the more challenging races on the calendar.

The single lap course heads straight into a climb out of town towards Axe Edge before opening out into the Peak District countryside. Runners pass through quiet lanes with views of Chrome Hill, Park House Hill and Dowel Dale before returning to Buxton, with more climbing waiting late in the race. Total ascent sits at around 460 metres, making it a true test of strength and pacing.

Despite the challenge, the event continues to attract a strong field each year. Organised by Buxton Athletic Club, it combines a well established race structure with a welcoming local atmosphere. Entries open in December, with options for affiliated and unaffiliated runners and the possibility of limited entries on the day if capacity allows.

This is a race that suits runners who enjoy hills and want something different from a flat road half. It rewards controlled effort early on and smart pacing over the climbs, with the scenery providing a distraction when the legs start to feel it. It is not built for a PB, but for those chasing a proper challenge, it delivers exactly that.

As one of the more established races in the region, now in its 40 plus year history, the Buxton Half Marathon remains a standout event in the Midlands. For runners willing to take on the elevation, it offers a memorable day out in the Peak District.
