An Arran Adventure Awaits

Scenic trails and island views await at this forest trail race...

Trail runners seeking a stunning island challenge will find plenty to love at the Whiting Bay Forest Trail Race, returning to Arran on 1 June. This five-mile event offers a mix of undulating trails, forest paths and sweeping views that showcase some of the island’s best scenery.

Starting from Whiting Bay village, runners begin with a climb to the picturesque Glenashdale Falls, one of Arran’s most celebrated beauty spots. The course crosses the Ashdale Burn just above the falls, before winding through dense woodland and joining a forestry road that leads northward above Whiting Bay. This section offers breathtaking views across the Firth of Clyde to Holy Isle and the Ayrshire coast.

Runners will also traverse open fields and cross a footbridge through the atmospheric Fairy Glen before the final stretch descends them back to the heart of Whiting Bay. With less than half a mile of tarmac underfoot, the course is primarily trail and organisers recommend grippy trail shoes to handle the varying terrain.

The race is held in partnership with the Whiting Bay Improvement Association and is a highlight of the local summer calendar. Previous course records include Tom Jessop’s 37:05 (2022) for the men and Corrina Goekeritz’s 40:58 (2021) for the women.

Whiting Bay offers plenty of post-race comforts too, with cafés, eateries and a welcoming pub just a short stroll from the finish line - all of which make it the perfect location for runners and supporters alike to relax and soak in the island atmosphere.
