parkrun Helps Stoke Celebrate

Stoke on Trent celebrates its centenary in 2025 and parkrun is helping to mark the occasion this weekend...

On Saturday 14 June, Hanley parkrun and Trentham Gardens parkrun will join forces with Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a special Centenary parkrun to celebrate 100 years since the city was officially granted its status. The day will highlight the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing and the vital role of volunteers who help make parkrun possible and all participants and volunteers will receive a special centenary medal to mark the occasion.

Hanley organisers have encouraged everyone to join the festivities by running, walking, volunteering or simply showing support. Saying that Stoke-on-Trent-themed fancy dress is welcomed and post-run celebrations will include a visit from Goodwin’s Coffee, serving hot and cold drinks and treats.

At Trentham Gardens parkrun, the excitement is just as high. They have said: "At first, we misread the Centenary theme as 'centurion' and briefly considered dressing as Roman soldiers before realising the real meaning of the event. Now, we are focused on celebrating the community’s past and future in true Stokie style!"

The celebrations will continue the following day with junior parkruns at Longton Park and Burslem Park also joining the Centenary fun. Other local junior events at Lyme Valley and Clough Hall Park in Kidsgrove will also be part of the celebrations. Organisers hope newcomers will take this opportunity to experience the energy and encouragement that junior parkruns offer.

The Centenary of Stoke-on-Trent marks a hundred years since the city’s formation in 1925. The year-long celebration is designed not just to reflect on Stoke’s industrial past, culture and identity, but to recognise the people who have helped shape it and to look ahead to a vibrant future.
