Local Winners At St Albans
A new 10K and track finish for the Fun Run refreshed the 'ice lolly run'...
An excellent turnout of 3,500 runners completed the 43rd ATW St Albans Half Marathon and supporting events on Sunday, 8 June 2025. The numbers were boosted by the addition of a 10K race with over 500 runners and the original 5K run that had 341 finishers this year.
St Albans Half Marathon stands out from the crowd with its Walking Half Marathon category, won this year by Joshua Lee (2:19:12) and Joanne George (2:44:47). The winner averaged 6:35 per kilometre!
The award-winning historic Verulamium Park is the home of St Albans Half Marathon – named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands – with over 100 acres of beautiful green parkland, lakes, children's play areas, sports facilities and 200 years of history to explore. The city walls and the outline of the London Gate can still be seen and there is a Verulamium Museum with hundreds of Roman exhibits on display.
The biggest field was seen in the St Albans Half Marathon, with 2,162 finishers in 3:18:11. St Albans Striders provided both 2025 champions in Adam Yorworth (1:13:16) and Heather Hann (1:19:42). More than 100 came through the finish in less than 90 minutes.
The newly introduced 10K was an immediate success as 502 finished in just over two hours. The inaugural winners were Harry Pettingell (Thame Runners, 34:12) and Lily Tse (St Albans AC, 37:26) in a superb fourth overall.
The 5K race was won by Rupert Ferguson (University of Exeter AC, 16:38) and under-15 Aimee Porter (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, 19:22), one of 13 athletes under 20 minutes.
All finishers received an ice lolly – a tradition at the event started by local businessman Phil Gibson in 1982 – and £1 from every entry was donated to the upkeep of St Albans' Abbey View Running Track, with the Fun Run finishing on the home straight for the very first time.
