Splash & Dash Beach Race

Splashing Into Summer

St Andrews's splash-filled beach race returns this July...

Runners are in for a wet and wild time this summer as the Splash & Dash Beach Race makes its return to the shores of St Andrews on 20 July. Organised by East Wemyss-based Nuts Trail Races, this unique event offers participants a high-energy challenge with a salty twist on one of Scotland’s most iconic stretches of sand.

A fixture on the Scottish summer running calendar since its launch in 2017, the Splash & Dash takes place on the vast expanse of West Sands Beach, a stunning coastal setting made famous by the opening scenes of Chariots of Fire. With rolling dunes and the sound of the sea, it’s one of the most scenic backdrops runners could hope for.

The course is approximately 4.5 miles long, consisting of two fast, flat laps along firm, compact sand. Starting and finishing at the Lifeguards’ Beach Hut, runners can expect a smooth underfoot experience, but there’s more to this race than just speed. At the end of each lap, participants take a detour straight into the North Sea for a full-body splash! Organisers warn: "You will get wet but just how wet depends on the mood of the resident lobster!!"

Finishers will receive a medal or memento and there are prizes for the first three male and female runners, as well as winners across veteran age categories from over-40 to over-70. In 2024, Sean Duffy claimed the men’s title in 28:32, while Clare Graham of PH Racing Club led the women home in 35:59.

Whether you’re chasing a fast beach time or just looking for a new way to cool off mid-run, the Splash & Dash promises a fun, scenic and unforgettable race day in the heart of coastal Fife. Just don’t forget your towel!
