Running Has Its Day

What are your plans for Global Running Day...?

Every day seems to be World Something Day. The USA even has National Nothing Day (16 January) when they celebrate...nothing at all! Some of these events are underpinned by a serious message, others are entirely frivolous, like International Talk Like A Pirate Day (19 September). This writer is looking forward to World Chocolate Day (7 July), while one to bring a smile to your lips is World Laughter Day, which is always on the first Sunday in May and was instigated in India by Dr Madan Kataria, founder of the Laughter Yoga movement.

There is always confusion between national, international, and world days. Still, the gravitas associated with Global Days cannot be ignored, and our great sport has Global Running Day on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.

So, what are your plans for Global Running Day? If you fancy a bit of competition, the best place to start is runABC's race listing for your area. Despite it being on hump day there are more than a dozen events taking place this year.

In Scotland, there's the Hill of Tarvit 5 miler at Ceres, near Cupar, and the Red Moss Kips Race at Balerno, Edinburgh. Head North to Rush Around The Rhubarb at Pudsey, West Yorkshire (sounds fun). Other events include fell races at Calver Peak, Derbyshire, and Otley Chevin Forest, near Leeds.

The Midlands offer includes the Sphinx 5 at Coventry and Hereford Couriers 5K at Hereford Racecourse. Meanwhile, down South we have the Yateley 10K in Hampshire and Wimbledon Trail Series on Wimbledon Common. On the Midlands/South border, there's the Bitton Road Runners 5K at Bristol.

You don't have to race to take part in Global Running Day, of course. Any run of any distance counts as participation, but why not enter the FREE Virtual New York Road Runners 5K in support of the event. The organisers are hoping to run virtually from Los Angeles to London by recording 8,754kms/5,439.4mls. For more information and to enter, click here...

Global Running Day is a worldwide celebration of running that encourages everyone to get moving. It doesn't matter how fast you run or how far you go. The important thing is that you get out, have fun being active, and inspire others to join you!
