New Track For Scotstoun

Scotstoun Stadium to receive new athletics track ahead of Glasgow 2026...

Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow is set to undergo major upgrades in preparation for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with a brand-new world-class athletics track scheduled to be installed this summer. The Glasgow 2026 Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August next year, featuring a ten-sport programme held across four of the city’s iconic venues.

More than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete. Scotstoun Stadium has been selected to host the athletics events due to its strong existing infrastructure and minimal need for extensive redevelopment, making it the ideal choice for delivering a top-tier competition.

Work on the new track began yesterday (16 June) and is expected to run through to 5 September. During this period, temporary stands on the east and west sides of the stadium will be removed to allow access for construction, with plans to reinstall them ahead of the Glasgow Warriors’ new season in September.

The new track is part of the wider legacy plans for Glasgow 2026, after the Games, it will remain in place, giving the local community access to a high-quality athletics facility - a lasting benefit to the city’s grassroots sporting scene.

Glasgow 2026 Chief Executive Phil Batty OBE commented: "There will be an electric atmosphere at Scotstoun Stadium, given the calibre and scale of the athletics competition taking place there. The return of the Commonwealth Mile will be one of the must-see moments of the Games"

Bailie Annette Christie, Chair of Glasgow Life added: "The new track will mean athletes of all ages across Glasgow can train and compete like the best athletics stars in the world and will be a legacy for the city for years to come.”
