Steam, Sweat And Speed
If you’re ready to test your speed against steel and steam, now is the time to jump on board...
One of the North West’s most unique running events is back as Race the Train returns on 22 June, offering participants the chance to go head-to-head with a steam locomotive over an 11-mile point-to-point course from Bury to Rawtenstall. With only 30 places remaining, organisers are urging runners to sign up now before the event sells out for the eighth year in a row.
Staged in partnership with East Lancashire Railway, this much-loved race begins with a burst of steam and the shriek of the whistle at Bury Train Station. As the train begins its journey south to the next station to change tracks, runners set off north, racing along scenic trail paths beside the historic railway line and the winding River Irwell.
The challenge? To reach Rawtenstall Station before the train catches them. As the engine picks up speed and steams ahead, runners push themselves across varied terrain in a test of stamina and strategy. The race has become a firm favourite in the regional calendar, known for its exciting format and picturesque route.
Adding to the atmosphere, spectators can ride the train, cheering from the windows as they follow the progress of the runners. Family and friends are encouraged to grab a concessionary ticket and take part in the action from the comfort of the carriages.
With a dramatic start, a scenic route and the roar of the steam engine behind you, Race the Train offers a race-day experience like no other. Places are limited, so if you’re ready to test your speed against steel and steam, now is the time to jump on board.
