Running up Anchor Road in the Potters Arf Marathon

Up for a challenge as Potters ‘Arf Marathon returns in September

2,000 places up for grabs for this much-mloved event

The Hanley Economic Potters ‘Arf Marathon is back in 2021 and this tough yet enjoyable race will see everyone in the mood to run or walk after the stresses and strains of a global pandemic. There is also a relay team option and a Junior race for youngsters, giving them a chance to burn off all that energy that has built up in lockdown.

Traditionally held in June, the 2020 race was cancelled due to Covid-19 but the future looks brighter thanks to the vaccines with this year’s Potters ‘Arf Marathon, following government advice, scheduled for Sunday 26 September. The new date means wapping the midsummer heat for autumn coolness but the one thing that hasn’t changed is the legendary ‘Heartbreak Hill’ (Milton Road), the toughest part of the race.

The men’s course record is 1:06:53, set by Matt Clowes of Cardiff AAC in 2018.  The women’s course record is 1:14:31, posted by Michelle Ross-Cope of City of Stoke AC in 2015.

There is a big Potteries welcome for all participants as the local population lines the pavements to clap, cheer and shout words of encouragement whilst handing out sweets, drinks and fruit. This happens from start to finish and provides a bit of extra impetus when climbing up Anchor Road or the near vertical Milton Road. It’s the atmosphere what makes this a day to remember along with those hills.

After a year that has taken a toll on people’s physical and mental wellbeing, there is now a sense of optimism as normality beckons. There is a need to have something to look forward to and the Potters ‘Arf Marathon offers that along with the chance to help local charities who have struggled during the health crisis.
