Great News For South London
Great Run is set to launch a brand new half-marathon based at Morden Park...
runABC South can reveal some exciting news for runners in South London. A new, major closed-road half-marathon is set to launch in Spring 2027, the exact date to be determined, courtesy of a collaboration between the Great Run Company and Merton Council.
The running route has yet to be revealed, but the event is expected to start and finish in Morden Park, the home of Morden parkrun. It is expected to see up to 9,000 people racing through the leafy environs of Morden, Mitcham, and Wimbledon Village in its first year.
Councillor Ross Garrod, leader of Merton Council, said: “Merton is on a mission to become London’s Borough of Sport, which means putting sport at the heart of everything we do. Our new half-marathon will be a flagship moment in that journey, showcasing how sport can bring communities together, open doors to healthier lifestyles, and help put Merton on the map as a destination for major mass-participation events.
“We hope that this will become South London’s biggest running event, and a draw for runners across the capital and the region. I am so proud that Merton Council is able to team up with the Great Run Company to deliver such a fantastic lasting legacy for the people of Merton.”
Sir Brendan Foster, founder and president of the Great Run Company, said: “Great events change places for the better, and that’s exactly what this half-marathon will do for Merton. The Great Run Company has spent decades delivering world-class mass-participation events, and we’re proud to bring that experience to a borough with the ambition to become London’s Borough of Sport.”
Local sports clubs and community groups will be actively involved, ensuring the benefits are felt well beyond those crossing the finish line. There will be fundraising opportunities for local charities, a local schools’ challenge and a free-to-enter 5K race to ensure the whole community can get involved.
The plan is set to be approved by Merton Council's cabinet this month. A cabinet report outlines the advantages that an event on this scale will bring to the borough, including a substantial boost to the local economy and local charities, increased visitor numbers, an enhanced reputation, and increased participation in running activities for local people. An independent economic impact study has forecast an annual economic boost of up to £1.7 million in local businesses.
