Running Into The Night
Whatever distance you pick, this autumnal event promises an unforgettable night-time experience...
We’re back at Glen Tanar Estate with another story this week, and this time the spotlight is on one of Scotland’s most unique and exhilarating events. The Illuminator Night Trail Races will return to Royal Deeside on 25 October, promising runners an unforgettable experience under the stars.
The Illuminator Run is a thrilling night-time trail race that takes participants deep into the stunning Glen Tanar landscape, starting from the village of Aboyne. By the light of head torches and glowing trail markers, runners navigate through forest paths and rugged hills, creating a magical atmosphere that has made this event a firm favourite in the autumn calendar.
Organisers say: "One of the highlights of the night is the legendary Light Zone, where sound and visuals create an otherworldly experience in the middle of the trail. Add in the infectious camaraderie of fellow runners, and it’s easy to see why our event continues to grow in popularity."
There are three race distances on offer, each designed to suit different levels of experience and fitness. The 8K route is the shortest but by no means easy. It features sheltered woodland trails and a challenging climb up Craigendinnie, approached from the steep side for extra impact and it’s a great option for families or those looking to experience night-time trail running for the first time.
The 15K route offers a bit more adventure, with open ridgelines above Glen Tanar and sweeping views of the surrounding hills. Runners are treated to the surreal sight of glowing head torches stretching for miles and the comfort of snacks and hot juice before the final climb.
For those ready to go all in, the original 15-mile route is a true test. It winds through Glen Tanar’s ancient forest, passing the Water of Allachy and the Water of Tanar on a hilly, immersive course that showcases the best of this breathtaking setting.
