Ilkley Incline

An Uphill Challenge

Yorkshire race returns for 23rd year of uphill challenges and valley views...

One of Yorkshire’s most unique running events is set to return on 3 September as the Ilkley Harriers once again host the Ilkley Incline race. Now in its 23rd year, this short but mighty challenge offers runners just one mile of distance - all of it uphill.

Starting at 7pm on Keighley Gate Road in Ilkley, participants face a tough climb of 560 feet. The route begins on tarmac before transitioning to a stony track, guiding runners steadily upward toward spectacular views across the Wharfe Valley. With front runners expected to finish in under eight minutes, the Ilkley Incline is a true test of speed, stamina and strength.

The event is open to both road and trail runners, and has become a popular fixture in the local running calendar thanks to its friendly atmosphere, scenic setting and the sheer uniqueness of the course. The current men’s course record of 6:52 was set by Christos Tzelis in 2024, while the women’s record of 7:49 has been held by E Clayton since 2014.

Organised by local club Ilkley Harriers, the event also includes junior sprint fell relays at 6pm, continuing a tradition that began in 2003 and giving younger runners a chance to be part of the action.

Spectators are warmly welcomed and encouraged to come along and cheer runners on from the roadside or summit.

Final word with organisers: "The Ilkley Incline is a rare challenge that rewards a short burst of pain with great views, friendly competition and a satisfying finish at the top of the hill."
