Galloping Into July
The Fen Gallop is shaping up to be one of Cambridgeshire’s most enjoyable summer race days...
The Fen Gallop returns on 6 July, offering a friendly and picturesque chip timed event through the flat country roads, footpaths and bridleways of Willingham in Cambridgeshire. This community-led race is known for its welcoming atmosphere and eco-conscious ethos.
Runners can choose between a 10K route and a 4-mile option, both taking in a scenic mix of concrete, gravel and trail terrain. Each race loops through the countryside, cutting back to Willingham before reaching Over, and finishes back at the village’s recreation ground on West Fen Road.
The event prides itself on strong local support, with enthusiastic marshals lining the route and plenty of cheers at both the start and finish lines. Family and friends are encouraged to come along, wave runners off and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere throughout the day. Every finisher receives a handmade wooden medal, a flapjack and fruit. The medals, introduced in 2017, are laser-engraved from wood with no plastic or metal, in keeping with the race’s commitment to sustainability.
Organisers told us: "The Fen Gallop is entirely not-for-profit, with all proceeds going to local causes. This year, 75 percent of the money raised will support the Willingham School Association, with the remaining 25% shared between the 1st Willingham Scout Group and The Willingham Octagon Community Hub."
After the races, celebrations can continue at Ploughman Hall with music, food stalls and a bar hosted by the Willingham Action Group.
