Trail Running Through A World Heritage Site
Take on an epic trail running journey through the heart of the Lake District...
Trail runners from across the UK and beyond are invited to take part in one of the country’s most scenic and ambitious events when the Altra 13 Valleys Ultra returns to the Lake District from 26 to 28 September this year. Set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this multi-distance event offers an unforgettable journey through the dramatic fells, valleys and lakes of the iconic national park.
The event, organised in partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority, offers four fully waymarked distances starting and finishing in either Keswick or Ambleside. Whether you’re new to trail running or an experienced ultra-runner, there’s a route to suit your level.
The 2 Valleys Trail (22K) takes in Borrowdale and Bassenthwaite/Thirlmere, making it ideal for those seeking an accessible yet scenic challenge. For more experienced runners, the 5 Valleys Ultra at 55K includes sections around Windermere and Ullswater and features 2,500 metres of climbing, while the 7 Valleys Ultra offers 110K of stunning terrain and 3,800 metres of elevation. The signature distance, the 13 Valleys Ultra, is a 180K loop covering every valley in the national park, climbing over 7,000 metres and testing even the most seasoned ultra athletes.
The longer distances are supported with GPS tracking and regular feed stations along the way, ensuring runners stay safe and fuelled as they traverse some of the UK’s most breathtaking landscapes. With Keswick serving as the event hub, all participants can look forward to a strong sense of community and a warm welcome before setting off on their individual journeys.
Sustainability is a key focus, with 5% of all entry fees going directly to the Lake District Foundation to support local environmental projects. All finishers will receive bespoke locally made slate medals and embroidered patches, and the event is registered with the International Trail Running Association, meaning participants can earn up to six ITRA points depending on their chosen distance.
Organisers say: "The Altra 13 Valleys Ultra isn’t just a race, it’s an immersive experience in one of the most revered landscapes in the world. With entries filling fast and limited places left in the longer distances, now is the time to sign up and be part of this epic Lake District adventure."
