Ironbridge Virtual Half Marathon Medal

Step over & sign up for the new Ironbridge Virtual Half Marathon

The commemorative medal from this year's race awaits finishers in the virtual alternative

Places are being snapped up for the new Ironbridge Virtual Half Marathon launched at the beginning of August following the cancellation of the main race due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Participants can run the 13.1 mile distance on the actual Ironbridge Half course that has proven to be popular choice for many or a route of their own choosing.

This year would have been the 31st outing for the Denso Ironbridge Half Marathon, a popular and well-organised race from Telford Harriers. The undulating route passes through the historic towns of Telford, Coalport and Ironbridge – the latter the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in 1709 - and is very scenic, attracting runners from near and far. Finishers in this year’s race would have received a bespoke medal featuring the Ironbridge Power Station cooling towers that were demolished last December and the famous Iron Bridge. Plus an eye-catching technical T-shirt.

Ironbridge Half was postponed twice as a result of the pandemic and organisers were planning a third attempt on 1 November. But the ongoing situation and concerns about safety meant a difficult decision had to be made and the 2020 race was finally cancelled. All entries have been deferred to 2021.

Understanding the disappointment this caused for its loyal following, the organisers created the virtual event. Runners sign up, run 13.1 miles then submit evidence of their session. In return they receive this year’s commemorative medal, technical t-shirt and goody bag as a reward for their efforts (and support).

Over 400 places have been taken with 88 people finished to date. Learn more about the race via this promotional video.
