New parkrun For The Highlands
New parkrun looks set to become a much-loved part of the Strathspey running scene...
The scenic trails of Anagach Woods in Grantown-on-Spey welcomed 85 runners for the inaugural Anagach Woods parkrun on Saturday 23 August. The team deliberately kept the launch low key, mindful of the 'parkrun tourism' phenomenon where seasoned participants travel long distances to be at a new event’s debut.
Starting near the old curling ponds, the 5K course takes participants on two laps of undulating woodland trail, combining gravel and softer paths. Organisers describe the route as 'undulating' rather than hilly, with co-organiser Beccy Stanton joking: “There’s no huge hills, although I’m sure they do get bigger for the second lap – and it’s woodland trails all the way. I’m biased of course, but I think it’s a wonderful route.”
The first event received warm praise from the local community. Fiona Mackenzie, one of the runners taking part, said: “Thank you for setting this up. It’s lovely to have parkrun in Grantown finally. Huge respect for keeping going for the four years. Community and exercise is a win-win! All I spoke to after loved it.”
Post-run coffee and chat is already part of the new event’s tradition, with participants heading to Fiona’s Wholefoods on the High Street to refuel. Organisers are encouraging people to walk or cycle to the start to keep the limited parking available for other woods users.
