New Route For Runners In County Durham
New Five Churches Round offers scenic challenge in County Durham...
A new 18.5-mile walking and running route is set to be launched in County Durham this Sunday (22 June), inviting the public to explore a unique trail that links five historic churches in the Parish of the Upper Skerne. The Five Churches Round has been created to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of both the parish and Sedgefield Harriers Athletics Club, and offers a varied journey through the region’s countryside using footpaths and bridleways.
The idea was first suggested by parishioner Vivienne Anderson and developed by Sedgefield Harrier and Durham county councillor Chris Lines, who designed the route to connect St. Edmund’s in Sedgefield, St. Michael’s in Bishop Middleham, St. Alban’s in Trimdon Grange, St. Mary Magdalene’s in Trimdon Village and St. Catherine’s in Fishburn.
Sunday’s launch event will see participants gather at St. Edmund’s Church for a 9:30am start where they will receive a blessing from team rector Revd David Lucas before setting off. Members of Sedgefield Harriers will lead groups of walkers and runners at different paces, with refreshments waiting at each church along the way.
Chris Lines described the project as a “labour of love” and praised the collaboration between the parish and the club, along with the wider community, for bringing the initiative to life. He hopes the route will become a regular challenge for locals and visitors alike, offering a scenic mix of landscapes including Hardwick Park, Bishop’s Fen, open countryside and a stretch of old railway line.
