Joe Beswick Sandstone Trail Challenge

Conquer Cheshire’s Ultimate End-to-End Route

Sandstone Trail event returns in 2025 - are you up to the challenge?

The Joe Beswick Sandstone Trail Challenge remains one of the most rewarding endurance events in the North West, drawing participants back year after year. In 2025 it will take place on 11 May, offering runners the chance to tackle one of the UK’s most scenic and demanding long-distance trails.

The Sandstone Trail is one of Cheshire’s most famous walking routes, following a spectacular ridge through the Cheshire Plain. This is not a race but a true test of stamina and determination. Participants have 10 hours to complete the challenge, making their way across rolling countryside, rugged sandstone outcrops and some of Cheshire’s most breathtaking landscapes. Along the route, well-stocked checkpoints provide essential refreshments to keep spirits high.

The event was revived by Helsby Running Club in 2011, continuing a tradition previously organised by the Frodsham Fire Service until 2006. In 2022, it was renamed in memory of Joe Beswick, a beloved local runner, coach and supporter of the event. Joe’s enthusiasm was legendary, and his trademark 'wahh hay' at Manley Common checkpoint became a highlight for many participants. His family has since donated two perpetual trophies, awarded to the first male and female finishers each year.

In 2024, 206 runners and walkers took on the challenge with Paul Martin completing the course in an impressive 4 hours and 47 minutes while Keely Smith was the fastest woman finishing in 5 hours and 35 minutes. Whether you’re a seasoned ultra-runner, a long-distance walker or simply looking for an unforgettable adventure, this is an event not to be missed.
