Golden Running
A Derbyshire event with golden appeal...
The Golden Gates Gallop is an iconic race that has been a staple part of the Derby running calendar since 1986 when a local resident wanted to raise money for charity through running. Fast forward 38 years and the event is still going strong with this year's race date set for 29 September.
Speaking about their longstanding event, organisers told us: "2024 will see a new start location outside the iconic golden gates of Elvaston castle as well as an improved pre, during and post-race runner experience. There will also be new prizes for the top three male and female runners."
The event has two distances to choose from - 5 mile and 2 mile. Both the routes follow the main perimeter bridle paths/tracks around the beautiful grounds of Elvaston Castle and are pretty much flat with a couple of very little inclines.
The 5 mile two-lap race starts at the famous Napoleon 'golden' gates before heading around the beautiful perimeter path of Elvaston Castle, including going up-and-down the iconic 'gallops' before finishing at the race village at Elvaston Cricket Club. Organisers say: "When you get to the golden gates listen out for the famous bell to ring and then head for the sprint finish towards Elvaston Cricket Club and the finish line!"
The 2 mile family fun run takes participants on one lap of the Elvaston Castle perimeter path (excluding the gallops).
The post-race village provides a great family atmosphere with bar, refreshments, fundraising raffles and market stalls from local businesses. All participating runners will receive a GGG Medal, a running snood from HUUB plus some other goodies from local businesses.
The Golden Gates Gallops is proud to be a not-for-profit running event, with all proceeds donated to Blood Cancer UK. Over the years the event has raised thousands of pounds for Blood Cancer UK and continues to do so.
