Drumlanrig Castle

Head South For Summer Running Fun

Fancy a weekend of trail running and a celebration of the outdoors in one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes next summer?

Outdoor enthusiasts get ready for something special next summer as the South Scotland Outdoor Festival will take place 26-28 June, with trail running set to play a starring role in a weekend of activity at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.

Staged within the spectacular grounds of one of Scotland’s most iconic historic estates, the festival offers runners the chance to explore miles of scenic trails through ancient woodland and open countryside, with Drumlanrig Castle providing a dramatic backdrop throughout. The event is designed to appeal to runners of all abilities, from experienced trail athletes to those taking their first steps off road.

Trail running opportunities range from 5K to 21K, alongside a kids fun run, making it an inclusive running weekend for families and individuals alike. Sweeping views across the estate, forest paths and atmospheric castle surroundings combine to create a memorable running experience in the heart of South Scotland.

The longest challenge of the weekend is the 21K Run Drumlanrig on 27 June, which takes runners across the full estate on a testing half marathon style course that showcases some of the area’s finest scenery. Also on 27 June is the 5K event, an ideal option for those new to trail running or looking for a shorter, fast and scenic race.

On 28 June, runners can take on the 10K distance, a challenging but accessible route that captures the best of the estate and suits both newcomers and seasoned competitors. The weekend also features a dedicated kids fun run on 28 June, with multi-lap routes ranging from 1K to 3K, all based in the heart of the event village for easy spectating.

You can also opt to make the most of your festival weekend by staying right at the heart of the action. Organisers say: "dedicated campsite offers a relaxed, friendly base surrounded by rolling hills, forest trails and the wild beauty of southern Scotland. Wake up to birdsong, enjoy stunning sunrise views and step straight into a day filled with outdoor adventure."
