Curfew Run

Race The Bell

Fancy a fun, fast and unforgettable midweek race with a distinctly historic twist?

Runners of all ages will once again take on the historic challenge of racing against time, and tradition, at the 2025 Curfew Run which will take place on Wednesday 9 July in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The unique event begins near The Barracks and follows the town’s iconic Elizabethan walls for a 1.28-mile dash, with one goal in mind, to beat the 13-minute toll of the Curfew Bell. Steeped in history, the Curfew Run celebrates a custom dating back to the reign of William the Conqueror, when Berwick’s bell would ring out at 8pm each night to mark the town’s curfew – a tradition that continues to this day.

Festivities begin at 7:30pm with the Curfew Fun Run, an inclusive event designed for children aged 12 and under, along with families who want to join in. It’s a light-hearted warm-up to the main event which starts at 8pm sharp and is open to runners aged 13 and over.

As the bell rings out across Berwick, competitors will dash along the scenic, winding walls in an attempt to finish the race before the final chime. First held in 1996, the Curfew Run has grown in popularity year after year, attracting local athletes, fun runners and visitors keen to experience the thrill of racing against history.

Organisers told us: "Entries are available on the night if capacity allows, but with the event’s enduring popularity, early arrival is strongly recommended!"
