Cross Country In County Durham

North East to host English National Cross Country Championships in 2026...

The English National Cross Country Championships will return to the North East for the first time since 2013, with Sedgefield in County Durham confirmed as the 2026 host. Taking place on 21 February at East Park, the event will be staged by the English Cross Country Association (ECCA) in partnership with Sedgefield Harriers and Durham County Council, with sponsorship from SportsShoes.com.

This will be the first time in 25 years that the event has been held in County Durham. East Park, located beside Hardwick Park, has previously hosted regional events including the Northern Cross Country Championships. The national event will bring thousands of runners and spectators to the town, offering a major boost to the local economy and showcasing the area’s suitability for high-profile competitions.

ECCA president Steve Gaines commented: “Sedgefield has already demonstrated that it has the ability and desire to stage major cross country events. While the English National Cross Country  Championships will represent a significant step up, we know that East Park can deliver a great course and we have excellent local partners in Sedgefield Harriers and Durham County Council.”

Sedgefield Harriers, celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, will play a key role in organising the event. Club chair Sue Dobson said: “We’re delighted that ECCA has decided to bring the English National Cross Country Championships to Sedgefield. Our members know better than anyone that East Park is a great place to run, and we can’t wait to welcome fellow athletes from all over the country to find out for themselves.”
